About Georiga

Georgia is located in the south-eastern part of Europe, at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and south-western part of the Caucasus. The Caucasus includes territories between the Black, Azov and Caspian Seas. The Caucasus Range divides it into two parts, northern part or The North Caucasus, and the southern part also referred to as Trans-Caucasus. Georgia is situated in the western part of Trans-Caucasus.

The total area of the country is 69700 sq. km. It is washed by the Black Sea from the west. The Greater Caucasus Mountain Range forms the northern border of Georgia. The southern portion of the country is bounded by the Lesser Caucasus Mountains. The Greater Caucasus Mountain Range is stretched from Taman to Absheron Peninsulas. It is divided into three parts, the West Caucasus (to Ialbuz), the Central Caucasus (between Ialbuz and Mkinvartsveri) and the East Caucasus (Eastern part of Mkinvartsveri). Georgia is bounded to the south-west by Turkey, to the south-east of Armenia and to the east by Azerbaijan. In the north, from the west to the east it borders Russian Federation, Krasnodar, Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Northern Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya, and Dagestan. 36% of the country territory is 1500m above the sea level. There are two summits: Skhara (5068m) and Kazbegi (5037) which are approximately 5000m above the sea level.

Georgia is rich in water resources. However, they are scattered on the territory of the country. Most of the rivers of East Georgia create Mtkhvari system and flow into the Caspian Sea. West Georgia is richer in water resources. The vast majority of rivers converge with the Black Sea. Furthermore, there are more than 850 lakes in Georgia. Their common territory is approximately 170 sq.km.

CLIMATE

The climate of Georgia is diverse which is conditioned by the location of the country: it lies within the subtropical zone. Likhi Range conditions the contrasting nature of different regions of Georgia. The climate of West Georgia is humid subtropical, while Eastern Georgia has a transitional climate from moderately humid subtropical to dry. The Southern part has a more continental climate. The Black Sea and The Great Caucasus Mountains influence the climate of the country.

OFFICIAL LANGUAGE

The official language of the country is Georgian. It is related to a Kartvelian group of Caucasian language family and more than 4 million people speak this language.
